Dear athletes and other participants in the Balkan Championship Master Athletics Outdoor 2022, welcome to the beautiful city of Thessaloniki welcome to the capital of Macedonia, welcome to Greece.

Thessaloniki is a city of great beauty and rich heritage, which combines tradition with innovation, the memory of Culture with modern youth, creativity with progressiveness.

Thessaloniki is the largest and most populous city in Macedonia. It is the seat of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the capital of the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki, the patron saint of the city is the great martyr Agios Dimitrios.

It was founded in 316/5 BC. from the Macedonian general Kassandros, who gave her the name of his wife and half-sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki and came from the union of 26 polychs that were located around the Thermaic Gulf. In the 2nd BC. century the city was conquered by the Romans and became the seat of the Roman province of Macedonia. It is alleged that it was founded on the site of ancient Thermi, from where the Thermaic Gulf took its name.

Due to its important strategic location, the city was an imperial capital during the reign of Galerius, who built an imperial palace in Thessaloniki. With the completion of the Egnatia Odos (120 BC), Thessaloniki, which was the most populous city of the network with international radiation, became the most important junction between East and West. After the division of the Roman Empire it was one of the candidate capitals of the Eastern Roman Empire, to finally choose Byzantium. It acquired the title of "ruling" city during the Byzantine Empire and was an important administrative and military center, while at the same time becoming a hub of intellectual and cultural development with flourishing education, art, literature, philosophy, architecture and science, with during the 14th century, which is characterized as the Byzantine "golden age of Thessaloniki".

After its conquest by the Ottomans in 1432, it remained in the Ottoman Empire for about five centuries. After the expulsion of the Jews mainly from the Iberian Peninsula in 1492 with the issuance of the decree of the Alhambra, but also from Northern Europe, Thessaloniki became their destination, thus acquiring its own Jewish community. The settlement of the Jews in Thessaloniki highlighted the city as the important Jewish metropolis until at least the beginning of the 20th century. Especially since the middle of the 19th century, the city has been the most cosmopolitan and multicultural urbanized center of the Ottoman Empire and the most important pole of political movements and movements that it has encountered in its long history.

After its accession to the Greek State in 1912, the population of the city underwent significant changes, such as the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the settlement of Greek refugees from Asia Minor and then - during the Exchange of Populations - with the departure of the Muslim population and the settlement of refugees. populations of Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace. This is the reason why Thessaloniki is often referred to as a "refugee". The population changes contributed to the change of the population situation of the city, with the strengthening of the Greek element. Its urban and architectural reorganization was accelerated by the great fire of 1917 and the efforts of the new Greek administration to add ancient Greek and European elements to the architectural style of the city, which led to the destruction of several Ottoman religious and functional buildings.

From its foundation by Kassandros, Thessaloniki as a prosperous Hellenistic city, until the era of Ottoman rule, utilizes its strategic position and develops into a multicultural city. Since 1912, with the end of the Balkan Wars and the integration of the region into the modern Greek State, Thessaloniki is the second most populous city in Greece.

The trip to Thessaloniki enchants thousands of visitors every year and makes your vacation unforgettable whatever season you choose!

A Square made of ashes! The heart of the city beats in Aristotelous Square, one of the most beautiful and largest squares in Greece. It literally came out of the ashes, as it was created with the redesign of the city by the French architect Ernest Hébrard, after the fire that destroyed the center of Thessaloniki in 1917. Its architecture with the colonnades and the arches on the facades of the buildings of Europe follows byzantine patterns and trends. One of its most beautiful parts is the impressive concave buildings that embrace it, the Electra Palace Hotel on the west side of the Square and the Olympion Cinema on the east, which is the seat of the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Its cafes are full of people all hours of the day while there are dozens of happenings and events that take place in the square throughout the year. Its 'opening' to the sea offers a unique view, which is why it is a favorite place of meeting, relaxation and fun for both Thessalonians and visitors to the city.
